Situated at the mouth of the River Coquet is the busy seaport of Amble-by-the-Sea, a popular destination for visitors wanting to explore the Northumberland countryside and coast. The town was originally a centre for boatbuilding but has expandad over the years and now is popular for its harbour and marina, as well as its dramatic sandy beaches, coastal walks and nearby bird sanctuary and country park. Explroe the fish centre with its shell fish hatchery, or sample some of the freshly caught local fish and shellfish in some of the many restaurants or cafes the town has to offer. The RSPB Nature Reserve, Coquet Island is about a mile south of the town. A bird watcher's paradise, it is home to a large population of terns, puffins and eider ducks, boat trips around the island can be arranged to view some of its residents. The pretty coastal villages of Alnmouth and Craster and numerous superb beaches are only a short drive away, whilst the fascinating castle at Warworth and Alnwick are nearby, as well as the National Trusts Wallington Hall and Cragside.
