Mortimers Cross is a small village best known for the historic battle fought in 1461 during the Wars of the Roses. The village now has a scattering of cottages, a shop, a local inn and is home to the English Heritage Mortimers Cross Watermill on the River Lugg. Nearby is the little hamlet of Lucton nestled in beautiful Herefordshire countryside on the borders of Radnorshire and Shropshire. The thriving village of Yarpole is also nearby, situated equidistant between the pretty market towns of Ludlow and Leominster. This area is home to the famous Mortimer Trail, a long distance walking route and nearby is the National Trust’s Croft Castle with its medieval fishponds. Enjoy a walk on the nearby Bircher Common, an area of lowland heath offering lovely views of the surrounding Marches, wild horses, sheep grazing and deer, ideal for enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the area. Close by, enjoy an afternoon visit to the Monkland Cheese Dairy, a working dairy producing and selling local, artisan cheeses, as well as offering a well-stocked shop and cafe. Leominster, dating back to the 7th century, possesses some fine examples of architecture including the Priory Church, along with a wide variety of shops, cafes, antique centres and pubs – it’s an ideal place to spend an afternoon. Berrington Hall, plus the Judge's Lodgings in Presteigne, Stokesay Castle, the renowned Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre and the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm are all well worth a visit.
