  • "We had a wonderful stay and we’re so impressed with Edna’s Cottage and the traditional feel of the cottage."

The owners did everything to demonstrate how happy they are to share their cottage which has been in their family for so long and we loved that. Thank you so much and I booked it again for October whilst we were staying there.

Your home away from home

Set back from the River Brathay, which flows through the pretty, Lake District village of Skelwith Bridge, is Ednas Cottage.

This lovely, traditional, stone property occupies a honeypot location just outside Ambleside, with flag stoned floors and a range fireplace adding character to the interior.

On return from a circular walk along the riverside, up to Elter Water, choose to relax in the snug sitting room, surrounded by the company of your loved ones, with the range fire roaring in the background as you catch up on some TV.

You can use the well-equipped kitchen to cook up a storm for the family, and gather around the table to discuss the events from the day.

Climb the staircase to find two charming bedrooms, each reflecting the style of the cottage with a thoughtful choice of décor.

They are served by the family bathroom, which welcomes a lovely hot soak in the bath tub after a bracing walk, or a refreshing shower.

To the outside is a pleasant seating area in the garden, where you can watch the world go by as you sip a chilled drink, and plan further adventures on the lakes and fells in the region.

You can grab a spot of homemade lunch at 'Chesters By The River', a lovely tea room and gift shop just down the road, where you can dine alfresco and try a selection of treats, from wood-fired pizza and classic cakes, to salads and soups.

Being in the heart of the Lake District, you have the towns and villages of Grasmere, with its gingerbread shop, Ambleside, home to William Wordsworth's Rydal Mount and Windermere, where you can enjoy boat trips, shops and many eateries to choose from.

Walking and cycling come in abundance, and there is also Brockhole adventure park and the National Trust's Wray Castle.

This charming retreat awaits your arrival, to a beautiful part of Cumbria.

SKELWITH BRIDGE

Ambleside 3 miles; Grasmere 3 miles.

Skelwith Bridge is located in the very heart of the Lake District at the foot of the Langdale Valley. Grasmere, Ambleside and Lake Windermere are all located within three miles of this picturesque hamlet. The small village of Elterwater with its English Lake District Inn is just a twenty minute walk passing Skelwith Force, a fifteen feet high waterfall where the River Brathay forces a passage through the rocks. Once a centre for the slate processing industry, it consists of a cluster of stone buildings by a picturesque bridge spanning the River Brathay. Today, hand-crafted articles can be purchased from the shop and cafe at ‘Chesters by the River’. The Skelwith Bridge Hotel and Talbot Pub, dating back to the 17th century sit in the centre of the hamlet. Nearby Grasmere is perhaps best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found".
