Ross-on-Wye 6 miles; Gloucester 13 miles.

The thriving village of Mitcheldean, with its old timbered houses and narrow streets is situated close to the magnificent Royal Forest of Dean, England's largest oak forest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The forest offers numerous trails that can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by horseback. Caving, abseiling and a high wire rope course are on offer for the more adventurous, whilst fishing, golf, kayaking and canoeing are other popular activities in this unspoilt area. Just a short drive away, in the historic waterfront city of Gloucester, you will find Roman foundations, Victorian Docklands and a spectacular Norman Cathedral (whose cloisters were used as a location in the Harry Potter films). Also within easy reach are the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye, in the heart of rural Herefordshire, boasting timbered Tudor houses and excellent shops, pubs and restaurants, and The Severn Estuary, famous for its tidal bore, which is a delight for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts and bore surfers alike.
